The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune is a premier institute dedicated to research and teaching in the basic sciences. It was established in 2006 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (renamed Ministry of Education in August 2020). In 2012, IISER Pune was declared as an Institute of National Importance by an Act of Parliament.
As a unique initiative in science education in India, IISER aims to be a Science University of the highest calibre devoted to both teaching and research in a totally integrated manner, with state-of-the-art research and high-quality education, thus nurturing both curiosity and creativity.
IISER Pune runs a 5-year integrated Master’s programme, which is the BS-MS programme, and a post-Master’s PhD programme, in an intellectually vibrant atmosphere of research. Apart from classroom instruction, IISER Pune builds student skills in areas such as scientific inquiry, problem solving, communication skills, computational sciences, electronics and instrumentation and workshop practices. In the advanced teaching and research labs of the institute, students have the opportunity to pursue experiments as well as advanced research under the mentorship of world-class faculty. Eventually, this should make education and careers in basic sciences more exciting and rewarding.

In the first few years after its establishment in 2006, IISER Pune functioned from temporary spaces in the CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) premises as well as hired transit campus with classrooms, offices and laboratories. IISER Pune is now located on a 98-acre parcel of land in Pashan, generously made available by CSIR-NCL. We moved, lock, stock and barrel, into this permanent campus in 2014, which is surrounded by NCL, the beautiful Panchvati hills, the Armament Research & Development Establishment and the neighbourhood of Aundh. From this campus, we have evolved into an integral component of the scientific, academic, social and cultural landscape of Pune.
The three primary buildings on the campus are a modern lecture hall complex, an academic building consisting of office spaces for our teaching and administrative staff as well as library and research laboratories, and adjoining facilities that host other research labs as well as undergraduate teaching labs. In addition, we have a 128-room guesthouse and mini convention centre.
We are a fully residential campus, consisting of students’ hostels, a central dining facility and a housing complex for faculty and staff members. We have several outdoor sports facilities including two tennis courts, a basketball and volleyball court, a cricket ground, an open stadium, as well as a fully functional indoor gymnasium with badminton courts, state-of-the-art exercise equipment and highly qualified and experienced trainers. We have a well-staffed medical clinic on campus along with an ambulance service that provides round the clock medical support to our students and other residents
Student life at IISER Pune is vibrant and can be a very enriching experience. Going beyond the call of academic work, there are several student organisations/clubs devoted to sports, entertainment, recreation and a variety of other fields of interest. Each of these activities is overseen by a faculty coordinator. As part of these clubs, the students meet regularly and organise events, workshops, field trips, lectures and other activities. Karavaan (annual cultural festival), Mimamsa (annual inter-collegiate quiz contest), and clean-up drives (by Prutha, the environment club) are some of the regular and successful endeavours run by the students’ bodies.
