Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra, Jammu & Kashmir

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) has been established under The Jammu and Kashmir Shri Mata Vaishno devi University Act, 1999 an Act of the J&K State Legislature (ACT No. XII of 1999 dated 12th May 1999) as an autonomous, highly technical & fully residential University. The university was inaugurated on 19th August 2004 by the then Hon’ble President of India Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam, who also delivered the first lecture to the students.

The University is approved by UGC under Section 2(F) & Section 12(B) of UGC Act of 1956. The technical programs offered by SMVDU are recognized by AICTE while Architecture program is recognized by council of Architecture. The university receives funding from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB)- an autonomous board set up in August 1986 under the provisions of the Jammu & Kashmir Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Act, 1986 of J&K State Legislature.  The university also receives funds from UGC.

SMVDU is a beautiful campus with a variety of facilities, including academic buildings, hostels, a library, a sports complex, and a hospital. The university is home to a diverse student body from all over India and the world. SMVDU is located 40 Kms north of Jammu in the scenic surroundings of Trikuta foothills, near the holy town of Katra in the Reasi district. The campus is situated close to the beautiful tourist resort of Jhajjar-Kotli. One can reach SMVDU campus by local or private transport from Jammu.  The campus is 6 kms. off the new 4 lane highway connecting Jammu and Udhampur.

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) campus is situated at an altitude of 2,700 feet above sea level, and the weather is pleasant year-round. The summer months (June-September) are warm and dry, with average temperatures ranging from 25 to 35 degrees Celsius. The sun shines brightly for most of the day, and there is little rainfall. Winter: The winter months (December-February) are cool and dry, with average temperatures ranging from 10 to 20 degrees Celsius. The nights can be quite cold, and there is some snowfall in the higher altitudes. Monsoon: The monsoon season (June-September) is the wettest time of year, with heavy rainfall and occasional thunderstorms. The weather can be quite humid during this time, but it is also a time of lush greenery and vibrant flowers.

There are many clubs and organizations on campus that students can join, such as the National Service Scheme (NSS), the debate team, the drama club, or the student government. There are many opportunities for students to volunteer their time for teaching students from rural areas under VIKALP program at SMVDU.
