Pondicherry Engineering College (PEC) was established in 1984 by MHRD, Government of India under the Seventh Five Year Plan to meet the requirement of an engineering institution in the Union Territory of Puducherry. Ever since its inception, the college has maintained a steady academic and research growth both vertically and horizontally with an aim to offer quality technical education and cater to the diverse requirements of the industries besides the expectation of the prevailing societal system. Eight UG and nine PG programmes in core engineering disciplines besides MCA and Ph D programmes in all engineering disciplines and basic sciences are currently offered in the college. As the first engineering college in the Union Territory of Puducherry, it preserves its uniqueness among all professional institutions which were started later. The college enjoys significant autonomy for administration. The college initially affiliated to Pondicherry University (A central University) has been granted ‘permanent affiliation’ as the first and significant step towards attainment of academic autonomy and obtained Autonomous status from 2014-15 onwards.
The Ministry of Education, Government of India under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme “RASHTRIYA UCHCHATAR SHIKSHA ABHIYAN (RUSA)” has approved for the Upgradation of the Pondicherry Engineering College to a Technical University and to incorporate it as an affiliating, teaching and research University at Puducherry to facilitate and promote studies, research, technology incubation, product innovation and extension work in Technology, Management and Science and also to achieve excellence in higher and technical education and other matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.
Puducherry Technological University comes into effect from 5th September 2020 officially as the first public state technical and research university in the union territory of Puducherry. From the academic year 2020-21 admission started in the banner of PTU. offering Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral study programmes in the prominent disciplines of Engineering/Technology, Science, Management and Entrepreneurship. Highly qualified faculty, diverse student population from across the country, best-of-breed infrastructure and an expansive campus sprawling over 185.8 acres of luscious green landscape on the shores of tantalizing Bay of Bengal present a vibrant ecosystem for the pursuit of intellectual excellence. Thirty-six years on since its original inception, PTU has built a legacy for itself and stands in good stead in terms of discernible academic parameters. PEC is ranked 101 in Engineering Category by NIRF India Rankings 2023.
PTU has two gent’s hostel which can accommodate 500 UG students and one lady hostel which can accommodate 200 students. Hostels are provided with all the amenities such as common hall including facilities for indoor games. Sports and games being an integral part of Puducherry Technological University (PTU) total educational programme, varoius Indoor and Outdoor facilities are developed and maintained for students such as badminton court, table tennis, handball court, basketball, volleyball, kabaddi, cricket ground, indoor circle hall, open air theatre etc. various clubs are active in the campus related to literary, computer and multimedia, health, innovation, cultural, photography, AI, fine arts and design etc.
