National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal

National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) Surathkal, formerly known as Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC) Surathkal, was established in the year 1960 at Srinivasnagar, Mangalore Karnataka.  Shri U. Srinivasa Mallya, a visionary and a philanthropist was instrumental in the establishment of this Institute and hence the campus is named after him as “Srinivasnagar”. KREC made a small yet significant beginning with 3 Departments offering BE programs in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. Since then, KREC grew from strength to strength and set unprecedented records in the field of technical education in the country. 

Government of India decided to grant full autonomy and accordingly the College was elevated to the status of Deemed University and renamed as the National Institute of Technology Karnataka. Subsequently, the National Institute of Technology Act, 2007 was enacted by the Parliament of India to declare India’s National Institutes of Technology as Institutes of National Importance. The Act received the assent of the President of India on June 5, 2007 and became effective from August 15, 2007. The Institute is governed by the rules and statutes of the NIT Act. Currently NITK is placed at Rank 12 under Engineering Category and Rank 38 under Overall category of NIRF Ranking 2023. 

The Institute offers eleven B. Tech Programmes, 31 Post Graduate Programmes (MBA, MCA, MSc. M. Tech. and MTech (Research)) and Doctoral Programmes in all its fourteen Departments. Further, NITK Surathkal is making significant advances in R&D and outreach activities in terms of collaborations with other Institutes of repute in India as well as abroad. The Institute has established itself as a premier center engaged in imparting quality technological education and providing support to research and development activities. NITK graduates are sought after by top industries/companies and the Institute has been rated as one of the best Institutions in the country with regard to student placements. In last two years, the aggregate placement in percentage has been >92 for the B. Tech. graduates. 

All sports activities were carried out successfully with the guidance of beloved Director, Dean (Students Welfare) and co-operation of members of Sports Advisory Council, teaching, non-teaching staffs and students during this year till today. Institute teams in different sports and games were formed and taken part in District, State and National level tournaments. Performance of our Institute teams was excellent in most of the tournaments in district, state and National level.  The institute organized district level university level and NIT level Badminton, cricket and Basketball tournaments. Different annual events organized like Incident: National Level Intercollegiate Cultural Festival (Even semester), Engineer: National Level Intercollegiate Technical Festival (Odd Semester), Crescendo: Inter-batch, Intra-Institute Cultural Festival and several other annual features and competitions specific to different interest groups among students
