National Institute of Technology, Durgapur

The National Institute of Technology, Durgapur (formerly Regional Engineering College, Durgapur), was established by an Act of Parliament in 1960 as one of the eight such Institutes aimed to function as a pace setter for engineering education in the country and to foster national integration. It is a fully-funded premier Technological Institution of the Government of India and is administered by an autonomous Board of Governors. The Institute awards B. Tech, B. Tech and M. Tech (Dual Degree), Integrated M. Sc., M.Sc., M.B.A., M. Tech., MSW and PhD degrees to students after their successful completion of the specified courses. The Institute imparts education in the disciplines of Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Earth & Environmental Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences and Management Studies. 

As decided by the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India, the procedure for selection of candidates for admission to the Bachelor Degree Courses in Technology in National Institute of Technology Durgapur and in other NITs is on the basis of JEE (Main) and the same is executed through JoSAA under the guidance from MoE, GOI. In addition to the normal intake, foreign students are admitted through DASA and by the nomination of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India, and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Government of India and Study in India Program. The NIRF Rank of the Institute is 43 in Engineering Category in the year 2023.

The Institute is located about 160 KMs north-west of Kolkata on the Howrah-Delhi main railway route and overlooking the National Highway No. 2(the great Grand- Trunk Road). The Institute spreads over an area of 187 acres of land. It is fully residential and co-educational. At present about 2500 boys and 500 girls reside in seven boys’ hostels and two girls’ hostels. The annual undergraduate intake is more than 1000 students

There is a centre for cognitive activities to converge all technical and scientific endeavours. There are various clubs such as dance, debate, dramatics, literary, Maths N Tech, Music, Environment, Knowledge etc. ISTE one of the oldest Student Chapter NIT Durgapur nominates projects and papers for the Indian Journal of Technical Education (IJTE) published by the ISTE HQ, New Delhi on quarterly basis with the aim to provide an appropriate platform presenting well considered meaningful constructively thought provoking non-political and non-conventional but critically analysing and synthesizing present and future aspects of the technical education system supported with meaningful suggestions for solutions, refinement and innovation.

Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) India, the collegiate club of NIT Durgapur, established in 2007, aims to integrate the students of the college into the international fabric of automobile engineering. SAE organizes a plethora of innovative events, workshops, industrial visits, and lectures all around the year and provides a competitive space where the sharpest minds battle in a quest to achieve distinction.
SAE, the major contributor in team Aavishkar, organises Aarohan – the official tech fest of NIT Durgapur, which is the second largest of its kind in eastern India. Team NDORS, comprised of SAE members, represents NIT Durgapur in the Mahindra SAE Baja competition organised by SAE India.

SPIC MACAY NIT Durgapur Chapter is actively engaged in contributing to the development of the rich cultural heritage. Officially, we represent NIT Durgapur in cultural events, national and international conferences which are attended by academic delegates from across the nation and beyond
