National Institute of Technology, Agartala

Tripura is one of the eight states in the north-eastern part of India. The state is situated between the river valley of Myanmar and Bangladesh, and is bounded by Bangladesh on the north, west, south and southeast; in the east it has a common boundary with Assam and Mizoram. The state is famous for its picturesque greenery as about 60% of its total land area is covered with green forest.

The Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), now MOE, issued the official notification for conversion of Tripura Engineering College, Agartala to National Institute of Technology Agartala w.e.f. 01.04.2006 vide notification No. F. 20-20/2004/TS III/ dated 10.03.2006. This is the 20th NIT in India and 2nd in the North-Eastern region.

The Institute (i.e., erstwhile Tripura Engineering College) was established in 1965 with three branches at UG level viz Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. It was initially affiliated to Calcutta University and had the same curriculum structure and examination system of Bengal Engineering College, like other institutes affiliated to the University. After the establishment of Tripura University, the institute got affiliated to the new Tripura University. Degree course in Computer Science & Engineering was started in 1999-2000 Academic Session. Institute is running 9(nine) BTech programmes along with 5 dual degree programmes.  Apart from this, Institute also offer MBA, MCA programmes and MSc course in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry along with dual degree programme in Engineering Physics and science courses in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and C-DAC centre for imbibing vocational education within the academic and industrial community.

The students and scholars of the Institute enjoy scholarships from TEQIP, AICTE and MHRD. The Institute offers scholarships to its Post-Doctoral Fellows. NIT Agartala was recently approved to be a QIP Minor Centre in the year 2012 and now accepts QIP scholars from the other institute of repute.

The institute has Hostel facility a 1000 (one thousand) capacity boys’ hostel and 500 (five hundred) capacity girls’ hostel have been made operational and the construction of another 1500 capacity hostel is going on and it is expected to be completed soon. The institute has a hospital attached to it having adequate number of doctors. There is a primary health centre at Jirania which is only 4 (four) km. from NIT, Agartala. There are 2 (two) medical colleges and hospitals namely “Agartala Govt. Medical College” and “Dr. B.R. Ambedkar memorial medical college and hospital” and a referral hospital namely “Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital” at Agartala which are only 17 km. from NIT, Agartala.

Massive work of infrastructure development is going on in the campus for the construction of more hostel, staff quarters, academic blocks, and facilities for recreational activities. The laboratories of the Institute have been equipped with modem facilities. Experienced and highly qualified young and motivated faculties are the main strength of Institute. The Institute is also utilizing the expertise of renowned faculty members (Regular & Retired) of Jadavpur University, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IISc Bangalore etc by inviting them as visiting professors.

The institute has established academic tie-up with IIT Kharagpur, IIT Guwahati, Jadavpur University, IIEST (Formerly BESU), NITK Surathkal, NIT Warangal apart from another renowned University / Institute of India and abroad. All NITs of India are being academically networked.
