Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad (IIT Palakkad) was established in 2015 as an institute of national importance by the Government of India under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. IIT Palakkad offers B-Tech programs in five engineering disciplines, M-Tech programs in six specializations (Geotechnical Engineering, Manufacturing and Materials Engineering, Computing and Mathematics, Data Science, Power Electronics and Power Systems, System-on-Chip Design), M.Sc. programs in three science disciplines (Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics), an M.S. (by Research) program in Engineering and Ph.D. programs in Engineering, Science and Humanities & Social Sciences.
Starting from August 2023, all academic activities will be operating at full capacity in the permanent campus. The vibrant permanent campus with world-class sustainable green buildings is being developed on 500 acres of land bordering the Sahya Mountain range adjacent to the Coimbatore-Kanyakumari national highway. The campus is aptly named “Sahyadri’, as an ode to the Western Ghats that surround the campus. The campus is located at Pudussery, which is about 7 km from Palakkad on the Palakkad-Coimbatore highway. The campus has well-equipped laboratories, classrooms and computing facilities, modern hostels for girls and boys, and sports and fitness.
IIT Palakkad offers BTech Programs in Five major engineering streams, that is, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Data Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The current yearly intake is around 200 students. At IIT Palakkad, students organise and participate in many recreational activities across cultural, technical and sports domains. IIT Palakkad has a sports and activities-loving student group. The students regularly practice various kinds of outdoor and indoor sports such as football, badminton, cricket, volleyball, athletics, table tennis and martial arts. The students get the support of coaches to improve their sports skills. The major driving force behind these activities is the student-formed “clubs”. These clubs certainly help students in enhancing their extracurricular skills or learning new skills.
The Career Development Centre (CDC) of IIT Palakkad employs significant efforts to refine the capabilities, personality and work readiness of students with the help of placement training and career preparation workshops. To facilitate better career opportunities, CDC constantly engages with industry through internships, industry visits, Industry-Academia conclaves, and also by hosting industry experts on campus. A combination of rigorous yet sufficiently flexible curriculum prepares the students for the challenges in a competitive industrial environment. The centre is functional under a Faculty In-Charge and the Training and Placement Officer (TPO) dedicated to the endeavour of grooming the students.
