Indian Institute of Technology Dharwad (IIT Dharwad) is an autonomous premier Science and Technology Institute established by the Ministry of Education, Government of India in 2016. Academic activities at IIT Dharwad commenced in July 2016 with B.Tech. course being offered in three core branches, namely, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The institute started offering B. Tech in Engineering Physics from 2021 and three more new programs from 2022 i.e., B. Tech in Civil and Infrastructure Engineering, B. Tech in Mathematics and Computing & B. Tech in Chemical and Bio-Chemical Engineering. In addition, IIT Dharwad is also offering a five-year integrated program called Bachelors of Science and Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Sciences from 2022.

The existing campus of IIT Dharwad has been established within the WALMI (Water and Land Management Institute) campus (135 acres), which is adjacent to Dharwad bench of High Court Belur, on the National Highway (NH-4) that connects Mumbai-Bengaluru. With the availability of regular transport service, the campus is easy to reach from any point in Dharwad and all the major facilities are within a 10 km radius from the campus. IIT Dharwad is less than 30 km away from Hubli (Hubballi), the second-largest city in Karnataka. WALMI has been generous in providing the necessary infrastructure for the students’ hostels, classrooms, laboratories etc. The first phase of construction of the 470-acre new IIT Dharwad campus is completed and is located two kilometres from the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway (NH4).

The academic activities of IIT Dharwad are well-tuned to bring out the best in every student. The academics at IIT Dharwad is focused on bringing fun and joy into the learning process by a judicious mix of rigorous classroom coursework backed up by exciting projects where students enjoy experiential learning by hands-on design-build-operate type activities. The exciting journey commences with the first year “Introduction to hands-on-engineering” course where, unlike in the usual workshop course, faculty members from Mechanical, Electrical and CS branches train the students on “mechatronic systems” approach.
