Indian Institute of Information Technology Kottayam is one among the 20 new IIITs set up by the Government of India on public-private partnership (PPP) mode with the initial infrastructure funding from the Central Government, State government, and Private Partners. The Institute started admitting students from the academic year 2015-16 and now functioning on its own campus at valavoor, Palai, Kottayam.
IIIT Kottayam is recognized as an “Institute of National Importance” by the Government of India and managed under the provisions of the IIIT(PPP) Act 2017. The campus is spread over 53 acres of beautiful land. It is located in the southern part of Kerala, commonly referred to as God’s Own Country. The nearest Airport is Cochin International Airport (Cochin) and the nearest Railway Station is Kottayam (KTYM).
The institution offers specialized courses covering all major research domains of Computer Science and Engineering as well as Electronics and Communication Engineering viz Data Science, Cloud Computing, Artificial Intelligence, Machine learning, Cyber Security, Parallel Computing, HPC, Programming languages, Bioinformatics, Signal processing, Communication, Networking, VLSI design, Embedded Systems, Computer Vision, Applied Electromagnetics and so forth, as part of the 4 years B. Tech / BTech-Hons program with equal emphasis on research, innovation, and incubation. Academic Flexibility, Focus on Hands-on Learning, Varied Pedagogy, Industrial Interface, and for the first time in all over India, our institute offers MTech programs for working professionals from the year 2020 onwards in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Cybersecurity, Big Data and Machine Learning as well as PhD program in all domains of CSE, ECE and Mathematics.
IIIT Kottayam ensures a 100 percent anti-ragging campus. The newcomers of this institute are well-treated without inequity and gender bias. We have an active mentoring system and each student will get faculty mentors. The girl students will be accommodated in the hostel within the campus. All the boy students of the First year will be accommodated in different rented hostels outside the campus (within 03 to 05 Kms) and the institute will provide conveyance (to and fro) free of cost. All students will be accommodated inside the campus hostels itself from the second year onwards. The students have access to the round-the-clock medical facility in the Institute Health Centre.
IIIT Kottayam continues constructing buildings and establishing research labs based on the requirement of faculty/industries. Constructing several research labs such as IoT Cloud research lab, Computer Networking lab, 3D printing design lab, Cyber Lab, Gyaan Lab and so forth are in progress at IIIT Kottayam for improving the practical knowledge of students. Selective students could visit leading industries (including AIM-Aayog, Intel, CDAC, NIWE) and international Universities such as University of Innsbruck, Austria, University of Klagenfurt Austria, Technical University Munich Germany, University of New Brunswick Canada, and so forth where our faculties are collaborated with research ideas.
The Institute has a subscription to IEEE CSDL, Springer Nature, ACM Digital Library, Turnitin, DELNET, MATLAB access and support, magazines, newspapers, and databases. The library is enriched with a vast collection of print and electronic resources in various areas of interest. The institute is also a member of Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) of MoE, Government of India.
IIIT Kottayam offers several forums for students to organize and develop their skill sets. Extracurricular activities like sports, fests, and other club activities are an integral part of student life at IIIT Kottayam. Clubs such as Wild Beats, Trendles, Sports Club, Drama Club, Music Club, Dance Club, Photography Club, Eco Club, and so forth play an inevitable role in the overall development of our students and helps develop their leadership, communication, and teamwork skills. The celebration of different festivals and cultural events provides opportunities for students to learn about different cultures and traditions and have a broader understanding of the world outside the classrooms. Our students have actively participated and attracted several prizes in the Inter-IIIT sports meet in 2018, 2019, and 2023 respectively. A full-fledged gymnasium and the service of a full-time Physical Education Instructor are available in the Institute with enough space for indoor and outdoor practice.
