Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Guwahati, Assam

Indian Institute of Information Technology Guwahati (IIITG) is one of the 20 IIITs set up by the Central Govt. in PPP mode.  A Bill (Act of parliament) to declare all the PPP-IIITs (Including IIITG) as Institute of National Importance was passed by both the houses of the Indian parliament in July, 2017. It offers B Tech courses in Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) and Computer Science Engineering (CSE), MTech programmes in CSE and ECE, and runs PhD programmes in ECE, CSE, Mathematics, and Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS). IIITG began offering BTech programmes in CSE and ECE since August, 2013.

In its very first year when it became eligible to get a rank of 66 in the Engineering category of NIRF 2020. What was even more notable is that it was ranked the highest among all MHRD IIITs. We were not eligible for ranking in the Overall category as we have less than 1000 students. Its rank was 73 in 2021 and 112 in 2022. Even though its rank has gone down, it is still the top IIIT in PPP mode.

IIITG strives to be attentive to academic needs of every student. Classes are conveniently scheduled between 9 A.M. to 5 P. M. Every class room is air-conditioned and has projection facilities. An Institute-wide wi-fi system provides Internet access throughout the Institute. Further, DG power back up is available in case of power failure. The permanent campus has been constructed on 67 acres of land about 4 km from Guwahati airport. The foundation stone for its permanent campus was laid on 19 January, 2016 by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The institute moved to its permanent campus in July, 2018. Partners of IIITG are the MoE, Govt. of India, Govt. of Assam, Tata Consultancy Services, Oil India Limited, Srei Infrastructure Finance Ltd. Amtron Ltd.

There is a Boys’ hostel which can accommodate 689 students and a Girls’ hostel which can accommodate 178 students. Students will either be in a double room with toilet facilities shared among 8 double rooms, or in smaller double rooms with a double-decker bed, but with an attached bathroom. A new girls’ hostel with a capacity of 30 (15 double rooms with attached bathrooms) and a new boys’ hostel with a capacity of 120 (60 double rooms with attached bathrooms) will be ready by July 2023. Each hostel has common rooms where students can play board games and watch TV. Beyond the class hours, students can explore wide open spaces on campus and indulge in outdoor games. Different festivals and cultural events are celebrated together within the hostel in a very friendly and homely atmosphere.

The Innovation and Entrepreneurship (I&E) Cell is a body within IIIT Guwahati formed of students and faculty to systematically foster the culture of innovation and the start-up ecosystem in IIIT Guwahati. I&E’s role is to engage a large number of faculty, students, and staff within IIIT Guwahati in various innovation and entrepreneurship-related activities such as ideation, problem-solving, proof of concept development, design thinking, IPR, project handling, and management at pre-incubation. The I&E cell is currently working towards establishing the first incubation center at IIIT Guwahati to accommodate budding student entrepreneurs. The flagship event of the I&E cell is Inizio, which is an annual E-Summit organized as a two-to-three-day event that serves as the biggest platform for students to see what innovation and entrepreneurship have in store for them. The I&E cell works in close cooperation with the MoE’s IIC and NISP to promote start-ups and SMEs at HEIs.
