Birla Institute of technology, Ranchi was established in 1955 by visionary-industrialist Mr. B.M. Birla. Today it has emerged as one of the premier engineering destinations in India. The Institute attained the status of a Deemed University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, in 1986. It is a full member of the Association of Indian Universities and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. For over five decades, BIT Mesra (located 16 kms from Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand) has been engaged in nurturing minds through a rich heritage of academic excellence. Further, a spacious new indoor badminton stadium, fine grounds and courts for football, hockey, cricket, kabaddi, kho-kho, basketball, tennis, volleyball, badminton, etc. are available. In addition, we have a well-trained coach and guide to support and encourage sports activities for the students.
There are large number of Student Societies and Clubs, which supports students to nurture their hobbies and other creative talents for relaxation and entertainment. These Societies and Clubs include Dramatics Society, UNESCO Club, News and Publication Society (NAPS), Bhartiya Sahitya Parishad (BSP), Highlanders Adventure Club (HAC), Amateur Radio Society (ARS), Music Club, Fine Arts Society, Photographic Society, Students Chapter of the Institute of Engineers (IE), Students Chapter of IEEE, Students Chapter of IEE, SPIC-MACAY, Nature Club, Audio Visual Educational Club (AVEC) and Indian Association of College Going Scientists (IACGS)
Drama competitions, music competitions and annual student festivals (ANKUR, BITOTSAV), are conducted on a regular basis. Several traditional festivals like Saraswati Puja and Viswakarma Puja are also celebrated with great devotion on campus. The students participate and organize “Guru ka Langar” yearly on the occasion of the birthday of Guru Govind Singh. The various Institute’s teams have regularly participated on several student festivals and competitions across all over the country, including those held at IT-BHU, various IIT’s, BITS Pilani, ISM Dhanbad, Rotary International, etc. BIT students were always appreciated and noticed by the national organizing society from their credible performance and they bagged several awards in past on various events including music, drama, fine arts, literary etc.
