Assam University, Silchar

Assam University is a central public university located at silchar. It was founded in the year 1994 by the provisions of an act enacted by the Parliament of India. The university has sixteen schools which offer Humanities, Languages, Library, Creative Arts and Communication, Earth Sciences, Education, Environmental Sciences, Information Sciences, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, Economics and commerce, philosophy, Medical and paramedical, Law, Technology and Management Studies. There are 42 departments under these sixteen schools. The five districts under the jurisdiction of Assam University have 73 undergraduate colleges as of 31 March 2020. Assam University is an institutional signatory to the Global Universities Network for Innovation (GUNI), Barcelona and United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) for its commitment to educational social responsibilities.

Triguna Sen School of Technology offers Computer science & Engineering, Agriculture Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Applied science and humanities.

The history of Assam University is the history of people’s struggle in Barak Valley. It is one of the subsequent outcomes of the Bengali Language Movement in the southern part of Assam. Assam University is the second Central University of Assam after Tezpur University. Both were established in 1994.

The main campus, in an area of 600 acres (2.4 km2), is located at Dorgakuna, Silchar, while a second campus, Diphu Campus, has an area of 90 acres, in Diphu, Karbi Anglong District of Assam.  With the Bhuban and the Barail ranges of hills at the backdrop, the University Campus is surrounded by lush green hillocks, natural lakes and the picturesque tea gardens of South Assam. The inner landscape is featured by sprawling lawns, well nurtured gardens and eco-forests. The serene setting makes Assam University Campus a unique one with exquisite natural beauty which captures viewers’ imagination and provides an ideal atmosphere for study and research.

Distance between the main Campus and the Silchar city is about 23 km. Silchar city being the gateway to the entire southern part of North East India is the hub of commercial activities and is known for its history as the Tea Capital of South Assam.  Silchar city is well connected by Rail, Road and Air Transport with rest of India.
