GFTI Allahabad

After India’s independence, the first Prime Minister, Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, recognized the need for a pioneer institute in Applied Physics and other physical sciences. An agreement was signed between the University of Allahabad and J.K. Trust, Kanpur on November 22, 1947, establishing the Department of Applied Physics and Technology at Muir College Campus. Its foundation stone was laid by Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of India, on January 14, 1949 and it was formally inaugurated by him on April 14, 1949. J.K. Charitable Trust funded the construction, leading to the institute’s name: J.K. Institute of Applied Physics and Technology in the year 1976.

JKIAPT, as a pioneering GFTI, has demonstrated unwavering dedication to advancing applied sciences and technical education in India. With a history enriched by visionary leaders, expert faculty, and ambitious students, JKIAPT continues to empower minds, pioneering research, and innovation. As the institute surges forward, it is poised to shape a brighter and technologically advanced future, leaving an indelible mark on the academic landscape of the nation. From its inception, JKIAPT has remained committed to academic excellence and research prowess. With a comprehensive curriculum, expert faculty, and state-of-the-art laboratories, the institute has consistently nurtured aspiring engineers and technologists into industry-ready professionals and innovators.

J.K. Institute of Applied Physics and Technology has continuously evolved to become a leading educational institution. Initially offering a three-year M.Sc. (Technology) post-graduate degree course, it later introduced a three-year Bachelor of Technology (BTech) degree course in Electronics and Telecommunication. In 1982, a new course in Computer Science was introduced, leading to a Bachelor’s degree in science.

The institute’s commitment to excellence was recognized when it was sanctioned a prestigious DRDO Project in 1986, leading to the introduction of the M.Sc. Computer Science (Software) post-graduate course. The project played a vital role in nurturing skilled professionals who now contribute to the nation’s security. Over the years, J.K. Institute has expanded its offerings, including a four-year B.Tech. (Electronics and Communication Engineering) degree course and a new branch of Engineering in Computer Science. In the academic session 2018-19, the institute further added a three-year Master of Computer Applications (MCA) course. With a remarkable placement record, its alumni are making significant contributions to the fields of engineering and computer science both in India and abroad, holding key positions in their respective domains.

The Department of Electronics and Communication (J.K. Institute of Applied Physics and Technology) is located in the Muir College Campus (Science Faculty) of the University of Allahabad. The Department is one of the oldest and a pioneer institution in the field of Electronics and Communication as well as in Computer Science and conducting significant research and teaching for the past 60 years.

The Department has a long history of collaborating with some of the country’s top research institutes such as DRDO, ISRO, CATC, NIELIT etc. The Defence Research and Development organization (DRDO) had selected the institute as a centre of manpower development in the area of Computer Science through which the students were inducted as Scientist B in their organizations up to 1992. After 1992, M.Sc. Computer Science program has been taken over as UGC program.

The Department conducts courses in the fields of Electronics & Communication and Computer Science. These courses have been designed to meet the current challenging demands of the nation. The Department offers B.Tech. (Electronics & Communication Engineering), B.Tech. (Computer Science & Engineering), M. Tech. (Electronic & Communication Engineering), M. Tech. (Computer Science & Engineering), B. Sc (Computer Science), M. Sc (Computer Science) and D. Phil programs in the field of Computer Science, Electronics and Communication.
