School of Planning and Architecture, Vijayawada, (SPAV), was established on 2008 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Now MoE, Government of India, as an autonomous institution. SPA Vijayawada is established under the SPA Act 2014, which is an Act of the Parliament of India. It is a premier Centrally Funded Technical Institution (CFTI) specialising for excellence in the fields of Planning and Architecture. SPA Vijayawada secured at 18th position in the Architecture Category of the NIRF Ranking 2023 and also ranked 3rd out of 40 in the Architecture colleges in the country by India Today Group 2023.
SPA Vijayawada is one of the three institutes of national importance, under the Ministry of Education, Government of India, offering education in the fields of Planning and Architecture. The school has distinguished itself and has grown as a role model in the professional education offering undergraduate, post graduate and doctoral Programmes in the fields of planning and architecture, while at the same time fostering research of a high order in these areas. All efforts are being made to develop the school as a place of excellence for innovation, creativity and research. The school is constantly endeavoring to achieve academic excellence in Architecture and Planning through innovation, creation, inclusion, acquiring and disseminating knowledge using sustainable local and global practices and enhancing the quality of society through responsible Built Environment.
At SPA Vijayawada, academic degree Programmes are designed to address and to take up physical, socio-economic and environmental challenges, so as to achieve future sustenance and hence to cater to the specific needs of the industry and academics. The key objective of these courses is to equip the students with adequate skills required to comprehend various built environment related issues and to analyze physical, socio-economic, cultural, political and ecological dimensions of the human settlements. SPAV has been constantly fostering research environment by actively encouraging students to take up research in several emerging areas. To provide exposure to our students to best practices in the world, our School has entered into Memorandum of Understanding with several reputed national and international institutions.
The School of Planning and Architecture Vijayawada shifted its activities to its permanent campus in June 2018, which is located in the heart of Vijayawada city along the ITI road, extending to around 9.66 acres. It accommodates the main academic and administrative block with a total built-up area of around 30,000 sqm, the Boys hostels with about 14,000 sqm of built-up area spread over two blocks with capacity of over 400 students, Girls hostels with about 6,200 sqm of built-up area with capacity of about 200 students and a Dining cum Visiting Faculty Guest House with about 4,300 sqm of built-up space. The campus also has an additional 2.66 acres land with green cover, which is to be developed as outdoor sports facility.
The campus has ICT enabled teaching atmosphere, high end digital surveillance systems, modern laboratories, spacious studios and classrooms, open-air theatres, auditorium, cafeteria, and outdoor sports facilities. The various labs include Computer Labs, Geoinformatics Lab, Art Lab, Material Testing Lab, Surveying Lab, Carpentry Lab, Terrain Modelling Lab, Climatology Lab, Environmental Monitoring Lab and Structural Lab. Central Library of SPAV is one of the ingenious and technical libraries in the southern region supporting teaching, learning, research and consultancy activities in the areas of Planning and Architecture. The central library is well equipped with both Wi-Fi and Broad Band Internet connectivity.
In SPAV there are six cultural clubs which contribute immensely to the vibrant campus. Rythmo club is a place where students come to jam, learn and make music of different flavours and organize fests like NASA and ZONASA. The fashion club organises fashion shows in various festivals and college events, dance club performs classical to western dances in various inter college cultural fests and have bagged quite a few trophies, making the college proud. Monologue club provides a platform to those who wish to explore the world of Drama, stage performances, Nukkad natak. Ground zero club responsible for stage decoration, invitation preparation, Posters and other essential arrangements for any event to conduct. Tasveer a photography club, literary club etc. The editorial board is responsible for the yearly documentation of activities, events happening in the institute as well providing a platform for young writers and content creators.
