Jawaharlal Nehru University, constituted under the Jawaharlal Nehru University Act 1966, (53 of 1966) came into existence in 1969. Its objectives, as defined in the First Schedule of the Act, are as follows: “The University shall endeavor to promote the principles for which Jawaharlal Nehru worked during his life-time, national integration, social justice, secularism, democratic way of life, international understanding and scientific approach to the problems of society. The University is ranked #2 by NIRF 2023 and accredited by NAAC at A++ level.
The approach of the University has been to evolve policies and Programmes which will make Jawaharlal Nehru University a distinct addition to the national resources in higher education rather than a mere quantitative expansion of facilities which already exist. The University has identified and is concentrating upon some major academic Programmes, which are of relevance to national progress and development. The basic academic units of the University are not single discipline departments but multidisciplinary Schools of Studies. A School has been visualized as a community of scholars from disciplines which are linked with each other organically in terms of their subject-matter and methodology as well as in terms of problem areas.
The School of Engineering was established in 2018. The school offered a five-year dual degree program with B. Tech in engineering discipline combined with a master’s program, M. Tech/M. S, with specialization in social science/Humanities/Science/ Technology up to academic year 2022-23. The school will offer a B. Tech program in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) from the academic year 2023-24 onward along with a Ph.D. program in Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.
Life in JNU campus is exciting. JNU nurtures and encourages its students to grow and excel in all fields. Besides academics, it provides opportunities for extra-curricular activities that are regularly organized. The university has numerous clubs like Mountaineering and Trekking, Photography, Nature & Wildlife, Literary, UNESCO, Drama, Music, Fine Arts, Dance, Wellness, Yoga, Taekwondo, Badminton, Cricket and other sports Clubs some of which hold awards and recognition at National and International level tournaments. JNU provides excellent infrastructure for outdoor and indoor sports activities such as cricket, football, badminton, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, lawn tennis, and so on. JNU is engaged in welfare services through the National Service Scheme (NSS). It is a public service program institutionalized under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Under this umbrella, students participate in various community service activities, such as blood donation, plantation drive, gender empowerment, disaster management programmes, social defence training programmes, etc. In addition, JNU has also adopted a Slum/Basti named Cooli Camp, JJ basti, situated near the campus, where students voluntarily involve in many activities such as teaching, career counselling, dance and music classes along with various sports activities. These programmes foster not only social awareness but also social responsibility and imbibe in them a sentiment of contributing towards the betterment of the society.
