Indian Institute of Information Technology Tiruchirappalli (IIITT), also known as IIIT Trichy, is an Institute of National Importance and one among the 20 IIITs proposed under the non-profit Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Model by MHRD. IIITT is an academic and research institute fully funded by Government of India, Government of Tamil Nadu and Industry Partners in the ratio of 50:35:15.

Industry partners include Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Cognizant Technology Solutions (CTS), Infosys, Ramco Systems, ELCOT, and Navitas (TAKE Solutions).

A major objective in establishing IIITT is to set up a model of education which can produce best-in-class human resources in IT and harnessing the multidimensional facets of IT in various domains. While the number of students produced would be small, the impact they create would be great.

As of June 14, 2021, IIIT Tiruchirappalli has started operating from the permanent campus at Sethurappatti Tiruchirappalli-Madurai highways. Before that, IIIT Tiruchirappalli operated from temporary campus within the premises of Oxford Engineering College campus, Tiruchirappalli from mid-July 2020. Before that IIIT Trichy was operating in the temporary campus within the premises of National Institute of Technology (NIT) Campus since March 2016. It has well equipped with boys and girl hostel, classrooms, sports centre, library, laboratories etc.,

IIIT Trichy is actively engaged in NCC, NSS, Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat (EBSB) program. Different clubs were formed for overall development of students in the campus. Those clubs are Web Devs Club, Robotics Club, Circuits and IoT Club, Literary and Debating Club, Fine arts, Music and dance, science, Yoga and Sports Club etc., Atrang a literature festival is organized. Many popular sports like Cricket, Badminton, Kabaddi, Chess, Basketball, Football and Table Tennis were organized and the winners are awarded trophies and medals.
