National Institute of Technology, Rourkela is one of our country’s finest technical institutes established as Regional Engineering College (REC) Rourkela on 15th of August 1961. It was granted autonomy in 2002 and named NIT Rourkela since then. Now, it functions independently under the Ministry of Education. The institute’s campus is situated at the eastern end of Rourkela steel city and spread over 700 acres of land.
NIT Rourkela has grown from a single building housing everything to a mega facility that supports 7900+ students, 363 faculties (346 regular), 285 staff and their family members. It is the 2nd largest government Institute in eastern India and has a huge infrastructure with strong academic base for research activity in different fields. With 20 academic disciplines, it is offering state-of-the-art undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and modular programmes in multi-disciplinary and emerging areas. It is one of the few institutes with departments like Food process engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Industrial Design, Life Science, and Management. NIT Rourkela is placed at 16th position (Engineering Category), 37th position (Overall Category) as per NIRF-2023 and has positioned ‘Band-Performer’ in Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements. It is leading in the QS Asia, World University Rankings and other global rankings among the other NITs.
Research is an integral part of the institution. NITR has built 13 centres of research and it has recently added 4 new centers of research i.e., Centre for Poverty Alleviation and Research,Centre for Excellence on Public Health Nutrition, Centre for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology and Space Technology Incubation Centre. NITR will soon have a Centre for IoT and Embedded Technologies NIT Rourkela’s appreciable research visibility pertinent to scholarly output, i.e., 13,790 publications with 127 h-index per the Scopus database and 7,138 publications with 110 h-index per the Web of Science database, is among the top when compared with all other NITs. NITR has created a massive infrastructure for R & D in most branches of engineering and science through ‘Centralised Instrumentation Facility’ centre at NITR that maximizes the utilization of all the high-end equipment’s and their better management. NITR is equipped with digital classrooms providing a standard way of learning and teaching.
Along with academic excellence, NIT Rourkela promotes extra-curricular activities to ensure all-round development of students’ personalities. The Student Activity Centre (SAC) is the central hub for student activities. SAC is organized into 4 primary societies (Technical Society, Literary & Cultural Society, Film & Music Society, Games & Sports Society) and has 68 clubs joined by 700-800 students. With the ongoing project of Sports and Cultural Complex it will facilitate various indoor sporting within the campus and may conduct national/international tournaments. The Open-Air Theatre of 1000 seating capacity at this complex will nurture the student and regional artists to showcase their culture and art.
An essential part of nation-building comes from innovation. Foundation for Technology & Business Incubation (FTBI), housed under NITR is an effort in the same direction. It provides facilities like office and manufacturing spaces, capital equipment and lab, internet, power backup, water supply, legal and IPR services, financial support to attend training and skilling programmes and funding for the fledgling start-ups. At present, FTBI houses 50+ incubated start-ups, 30+ pre-incubation teams with 200+ jobs generated. It is currently boosting different sectors like start-ups working on renewable energy, e-vehicle technology, and battery development, waste-to-wealth innovations, IoT-based traffic management system, organic farming and pesticide development, organic healthcare products, medical, consumer electronics drone and unmanned vehicle technology to name a few. NITR is constantly encouraging schemes likes Vocal for Local, Start-Up India, Skill India, Digital India, Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, Swacchh Bharat Abhiyan, Green India and many more. NITR has adopted 5 villages to build self-reliant communities to provide a source of revenue to the people and encourage women of the self-help groups under Unnat Bharat Abhiyan. NIT Rourkela is a part of the pilot program ‘Gender Advancement for Transforming Institutions’ (GATI) launched by the DST and is working for Gender Equityin the fields of Science & Technology to encourage women in STEM.
NIT Rourkela recognizes the potential role of its alumni in shaping the future of the institute. More than 25000+ alumni of NITR actively are achieving excellence in their fields. The faculty, staff, students and alumni of the institute stand together to promote the objective of the Institute i.e., ‘To bring the best of learning, teaching, innovation, research, administration and growth for nation-building.’
