UIET, Chandigarh was established by Panjab University as an in-campus department in 2002. With the vision to be the front runner in Engineering Education and Research, the mission of UIET is to produce professionally competent students for bright careers in Engineering and Technology by providing value-based quality education. The well qualified faculty is the backbone of the Institute. State-of-the-art laboratories provide the exposure to the students towards practical aspects of engineering. High-end computing facilities and internet connectivity through 1Gbps National Knowledge Network (NKN) provide ample scope for students to learn round the clock. The whole campus is Wi-Fi enabled and students having laptops avail this facility in the institute as well as in the hostels.
UIET has MoUs with leading industries and academia like Infosys, PGIMER, CSIO, C-DAC, CFSL, IIT Kanpur, IIT Roorkee, etc. The institute has good liaison with Industries and research organizations. Bharti group of industries has set up a chair in Telecommunication to boost research in the field of Telecommunication. The institute is a member of Campus Connect Programme of Infosys Pvt. Ltd., and has alliances with IBM, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Amazon, Google and Oracle. The Programme supports faculty training in industry, project guidance to students and provides curricula inputs, industry perspective of teaching-learning and expert lecture inputs. UIET nurtures exchange relationships with institutes abroad, wherein our students are facilitated to participate in summer training programs. Institute has also signed an MOU with University of Western Australia, Nottingham Trent University, UK, for exchange of students and faculty along with joint research projects.
Along with teaching, the major focus of the Institute is on research and development activities. Faculty members carry out R&D activities leading to research publications in reputed journals/conferences and patents. The faculty is working on various sponsored research projects funded by agencies like MEITY, AICTE, DST, UGC, MoE, ICMR, MHA, DRDO and Department of Biotechnology, etc. Conferences, Seminars and Workshops are organized frequently to facilitate interaction at various levels among the students, faculty and the experts from industries as well as research organizations. Integrated development of the students as professionals with soft skills is emphasized upon. With the regular revision of syllabi, more industry-oriented courses and open Electives have regularly been introduced in the curriculum.
UIET has inculcated a culture to promote ‘Make in India’ Campaign of Gov among faculty and students and has inaugurated a Technology Business Incubator at UIET (TBIU), Panjab University. TBIU has been created to provide a co-working ecosystem to budding entrepreneurs, an incubation and working space with basic facilities. UIET provides an ecosystem to evolve and refine technologies and products that require expertise at the interphase of engineering sciences. Some of the Start-ups incubated at UIET have won the prizes at National Level also. An Institute Innovation Council (IIC) has also been set up to prepare the students with the skills like Critical Thinking, Design Thinking; Innovative thought process and entrepreneurial mind set.
UIET has a Training and Placement Cell (TPC) to provide the best training and placement opportunities to students. Continuous efforts are made by the dedicated members of the team to approach more companies and invite them on campus to recruit students and to provide them with placement and internship opportunities. TPC also organizes special lectures and soft skills programs regularly, wherein experts from industry are invited and they make students aware about the latest technologies/ processes in industry and guide them about how to appear for interviews and prepare for group discussions, as soft skills play a vital role in the selection process.
To provide a platform for students to accelerate their all-round development, UIET has established University TECHNO-crats Society (UTECHNOS). A number of student clubs and subcommittees organize multiple events and annual Techno Cultural fest GOONJ for promotion of socio-cultural activities in addition to the improvement of the students in their technical skills. Annual inter-college level sports-fest UMANG to boost the enthusiasm among the students and to provide them with an opportunity to showcase their talent in the field of sports. In addition to this, inter-branch and Intra-UIET sports events are organized under the flagship of the Sports Committee.
Any institution’s alumni are key to its growth. Keeping this in mind, the Alumni Affairs Cell aims at fortifying the bond between the alumni and their alma mater. Its mission is to bridge the gap between students and alumni, thereby facilitating an exchange of resources, opportunities, and mentorship. The Alumni Affairs Cell has successfully gathered and maintained a database of alumni from the 2006 to 2022 batches. This cell encourages alumni engagement through events and interactions with the students. Various events and activities are carried forward by a devoted group of students called STAR (Student Team for Alumni Relations), under supervision and support of faculty members of UIET such as pre- placement online seminars, training on resume creation as well as interview preparation tactics for the top technology companies such as Meta, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft and Google. LinkedIn training is also provided in order to train students to identify and explore better career opportunities.
