Performance in Class XII (or equivalent) examination for admission to IITs
The Candidates must satisfy at least one of the following two criteria with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as compulsory subjects in the year of first appearance in the Class XII (or equivalent examination):
- Must have secured at least 75% aggregate marks in the Class XII (or equivalent) Board examination. The aggregate marks for SC, ST and PwD candidates should be at least 65%.
- The aggregate marks scored by the candidate in the 2024 Class XII (or equivalent) Board examination will be considered for candidates who will appear in the Class XII examination in 2024.
- The aggregate marks scored by the candidate in the 2023 Class XII (or equivalent) Board examination will be considered provided the candidate does not reappear in the Class XII (or equivalent) examination in 2024 in any of the subjects.
- If a candidate had appeared in his/her Class XII (or equivalent) in 2022 and wishes to improve his/her aggregate marks to meet the “aggregate marks of 75% (or 65% for SC, ST and PwD) criterion”, he/she can reappear for any number of subjects he/she wishes for improvement. The percentage marks in this situation will be calculated by considering the marks obtained in 2022 or 2023, whichever is higher, in the respective subjects, in his/her two attempts in 2022 and 2023.
- The above will also apply correspondingly for the candidates who first appeared for their Class XII examination in 2021 but the examination Board of Class XII (or equivalent) declared the results for the academic year 2020 – 21 on or after October 25, 2021
- Note: Qualifying in the examinations mentioned above does not guarantee admission in any of the institutes. Each institute / academic program may have additional eligibility requirements. Candidates have to meet all the eligibility requirements to obtain admission.
- Must be within the category-wise top 20 percentile of successful candidates in their respective Class XII (or equivalent) board examination.
- The percentile calculation will be done for all the required subjects, in a single academic year only. Therefore, candidates appearing for improvement in Board examinations can either appear in one or more subjects and secure 75% aggregate marks (65% for SC, ST and PwD) after improvement, OR, appear for improvement in ALL subjects to be in top 20 percentile of the corresponding academic year.
- The marks scored in the following five subjects will be considered for calculating the aggregate marks and the cut-off marks for fulfilling the top 20 percentile criterion. For calculation of the total marks for five subjects, if the marks awarded in a subject is NOT out of 100, then the marks will be scaled (up or down) to 100 so that the total aggregate marks out of 500.
- If a Board awards only letter grades without providing an equivalent percentage of marks on the grade sheet, the candidate should obtain a certificate from the Board specifying the equivalent marks and submit it at the time of acceptance of the allocated seat. In case such a certificate is not provided, the decision taken by the Joint Implementation Committee of JEE (Advanced) will be final.
- For candidates who appeared in the Class XII (or equivalent) Board examination for the first time in 2023 and reappeared in ALL subjects (for whatsoever reason) in 2024, the best of the two performances will be considered.
- If a Board gives aggregate marks considering both Class XI and Class XII examinations (in the 10+2 system), then only Class XII marks will be considered. If a Board gives aggregate marks considering the results of all three years of a 3-year diploma or courses of equivalent duration, then the marks scored only in the final year will be considered. Similarly, for Boards which follow a semester system, the marks scored in the final two semesters will be considered.
- In case any of the subjects Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Language are not evaluated in the final year (e.g., in a 3-year diploma course), then the marks for the same subject from the previous year/s will be used for calculating percentage of aggregate marks.
- If a Board does not give marks scored in individual subjects but gives only the aggregate marks, then the aggregate marks given by the Board will be considered as such.
Regarding the cut-off marks for the top 20 percentile:
category-wise cut-off marks for the top 20 percentile are calculated based on the marks scored by the successful candidates who appeared in their respective boards for all the required subjects, in the particular year.
- Cut off marks for PwD candidates will be the same as the lowest of the cut-off marks for GEN, GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC and ST categories.
- It is clarified that top 20 percentile cut-off for the academic year 2023–24 will be considered against the successful candidates who appeared in the Class XII (or equivalent) examination in 2024.
- Similarly, top 20 percentile cut-off for the academic year 2022–23 will be considered against the successful candidates who appeared in the Class XII (or equivalent) examination in 2023.
- Candidates who appeared in Class XII (or equivalent) examination for the first time in 2022 and wish to (or have to) reappear in 2023 with the objective to qualify through top 20 percentile cut-off criteria, must reappear in all the subjects. For such candidates, top 20 percentile cut-off for 2023 will be considered.
- In case a Board does not provide information about the cut-off for the top 20 percentile, the candidate will have to produce a certificate from the respective Board stating that he/she falls within the top 20 percentile of successful candidates. If the candidate fails to do so, then the cut-off marks, in the respective categories, for the Central Board of Secondary Education will be used.
- The above will also apply correspondingly to those candidates who first appeared for their Class XII examination in 2021 but the examination Board of Class XII (or equivalent) declared the results for the academic year 2020-21 on or after October 25, 2021.

- For calculation of the total marks for five subjects, if the marks awarded in a subject is NOT out of 100, then the marks will be scaled (up or down) to 100 so that the total aggregate marks is out of 500.
- If a Board awards only letter grades without providing an equivalent percentage of marks on the grade sheet, the candidate should obtain a certificate from the Board specifying the equivalent marks and submit it at the time of acceptance of the allocated seat. Step by Step Procedure involved in JoSAA Counselling (Online)
The very first step for the counselling is registration on the official website of JoSAA online portal https://josaa.nic.in/. To log in to the JoSAA candidate portal, students have to use their JEE Main Application number and password. Upon successful login, the candidates’ details will automatically be fetched from the JEE Main database. Students must verify all the details and then submit for final confirmation. Only the state code of eligibility option can be modified for selection.
After registration, candidates will have to fill in their Choice of Institute and academic programs (branches) based on the rank obtained in JEE Main or JEE Advanced results. Students are advised to select as many choices as they can as this will increase the chances of admission. Note that JoSAA choice filling has to be done within specified dates mentioned in the schedule.
The authorities will announce two mocks to help candidates know their chances of admission into the institutes. The mock seat allotment process will help the candidates understand which seats can be allotted to them on the basis of their preference list. Candidates will also be able to change their preferences after the mock allotment. After the final day of choice filling, the candidate can lock their choices else it will be automatically locked before Round-1. Choice filling letter can be downloaded from the JoSAA portal.
JoSAA will conduct a total of six rounds of seat allotment. The seat allotment process of JoSAA will be done on the basis of merit, category, selected preferences, and availability of seats. JoSAA first round of seat allotment will be released online. All the seat-allotted candidates will be able to download the initial seat allotment intimation slip from the JoSAA portal.
Options available after initial Seat Allotment (Round 1):
Candidates will have three options after initial Seat Allotment and has to select one option.
- Freeze – When the candidate is satisfied with the allotted seat and does not wish to participate in further rounds of counselling.
- Float – When the candidate is satisfied with the seat but would like to participate in further rounds of counselling for better choices in other institutes above the choice allotted.
- Slide – When the candidate has accepted the seat allotted but would like to participate in further rounds of counselling for a higher preferred course above the choice in the same institute.
Candidates with willingness option Freeze/Slide/Float are required to upload the necessary documents on their JoSAA-2024 portal.
Candidates who will be allotted seats will have to pay the seat acceptance fee through e-challan or SBI net banking. Note that the seat acceptance fee will vary depending on the category of the candidate. The seat acceptance fee excluding JoSAA processing charges of Rs. 5000 will be adjusted against the admission fee at the institute. Candidates should remit seat acceptance fee using Debit card / UPI / Credit card / Net Banking / E-Challan of State Bank of India downloaded from JoSAA portal. Candidates has to pay seat acceptance fee only once and is not refundable.
After payment of seat acceptance fee, at the time of document verification, if the document verification officer raises any query, the candidate must respond in online mode (through candidate portal) within the stipulated time. Failure to respond to the query(ies) on time will lead to cancellation of the allotted seat and the candidate will no longer be able to participate in the JoSAA process. It is the responsibility of the candidate to check the online portal at regular intervals of time and respond to queries (if any) without fail within the stipulated time. Document verification is done ONLY for those candidates who have successfully paid the seat acceptance fee. The uploaded documents will be verified by the concerned institute online and a confirmation page accepting the documents and verification success will be displayed.
Seat will be confirmed by IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTI Institutes only after successful verification of the uploaded documents and ensuring that the candidate meets all the eligibility criteria. If all the documents are found to be valid and all the eligibility criteria are met by the candidate, the allocated seat will be provisionally confirmed and the candidate will be notified on the online JoSAA 2024 portal. If all the documents are found to be valid and the eligibility criteria are met by the candidate, a “Provisional offer and Seat Acceptance letter” will be available for download on the online portal. Provisional Acceptance means that the candidate has accepted the offer, but the final acceptance is contingent on successful verification of certificates by, and on joining, the provisionally allotted institute and payment of the balance institute fee, if any.
If a candidate opts for Freeze option, he/she can download the Provisional seat allotment letter and wait for the welcome letter or offer letter from the allotted institute which will be sent through mail or message. If the candidate opts for FLOAT or SLIDE option, then he/she will be participating in the further rounds. Seat allotted may or may not change in the further rounds. You may continue till the last round of counselling or can drop at any round by freezing the seat. If a candidate is satisfied with the seat allotted, then he/she can report physically at the institute allotted and confirm his/her admission, else keep participating in the further rounds.

For NIT, IIIT, GFTI, the candidate can withdraw the seat by reporting online up to the final round of online seat allocation by submitting a duly signed declaration form. The candidate can see the approved/rejected status of the withdrawal request on the JoSAA portal and download the approval/rejection letter. If withdrawal application is rejected, the candidate can submit the request again before the end of the fifth round of counselling with proper documentation. The candidate will have the option to cancel a submitted withdrawal request through the online JoSAA portal, if they wish to do so, but only before the request is accepted by the reporting officer. An OTP will be sent to the candidate’s mobile number and email ID, for cancelling the withdrawal request. The candidate shall use this OTP to confirm that she/he wants to cancel the withdrawal request from seat allocation process.
- Exit Option: The candidate who has NOT been allotted a seat in JoSAA, can EXIT from the seat allocation process through the JoSAA portal starting from the round 2 and up to the second last round of seat allocation, i.e., before the last round of seat allocation. Thus, the candidate will forfeit the eligibility for admission to any of the institutes by creating a request for Exit which shall be processed online and the candidate shall then exit.
At the end of Round 5 of JoSAA counselling, the seat allotted in the last round 5 will be automatically locked and become your final seat allotted. There is no option of slide or freeze available in the final round of JoSAA counselling. The candidate can download the Provisional Seat Allotment letter form the JoSAA portal (only for IITs) and submit at the allotted institute at the time of physical reporting
At the end of the Round 5 of JoSAA Counselling, the candidates having a provisionally allocated seat (allocated in any round of JoSAA and which has not been cancelled or withdrawn) in NIT, IIIT GFTI are required to pay the Partial Admission Fee (PAF) from their JoSAA portal. After successful fee payment, the candidates can download Provisional Admission Letter from JoSAA portal. The candidates have to physically report at the institute which has been allotted to them. Candidates must carry all the documents which have been listed on JoSAA website at the time of the reporting at the admitting institute. All the certificates will be re-checked by the admitting Institute and the admission will be cancelled if these fail to meet the requirements as per the prevailing norms.
