The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), Government of India, set up the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology at Jais, Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, by an Act of the Parliament. The institute has accorded the status of an Institution of National Importance along with the lines of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). The institute is empowered to award degrees in its own right and is co-promoted as an energy domain specific institute by six leading oil public sector units (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Oil India Limited, Gail (India) Limited, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited) in association with the Oil Industry Development Board. The institute is associated with the leading International Universities/Institutions specializing in the domain of Petroleum Technology and Energy Sector.
The prime objective of the institute is to provide excellent education, training, and research to roll out efficient human resources, and to meet the growing requirements of the Petroleum and Energy industry. The institute is offering a number of Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Programmes, Postgraduate Diploma Courses and Doctoral Programmes in Petroleum Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Management.
Since its very inception in 2008, the Institute has been instrumental in imparting world class education to its students and providing innovative technological solutions to the problems being faced by Indian petroleum industries, both in upstream and downstream sector. The mission of the Institute is to serve as the fountainhead for nurturing word class Engineers and Scientists by providing state-of-the-art education, training and research who shall be capable to lead not only the future petroleum industries but also to help society by developing affordable technologies to reduce country’s dependence on fossil fuels.
Recently the Institute has undergone many structural changes for its better functioning. The campus has now become a dynamic venue and is always abuzz with a plethora of activities. Talks are being delivered on regular basis by experts from reputed organizations on wide-ranging topics which bring fresh insights into classrooms and campus furthering Institute’s broad interest in serving the society. As part of outreach activities, an innovative initiative ‘’Project Amethi’’ has also been launched for overall education and inclusive development of local populace of Amethi District.
The Institute is now slowly becoming a world class education, research and training centre. It has created an excellent research ambience with state-of-the-art facilities and most of the R&D activities are directed in line with the emerging needs of Oil, Gas and Energy sectors including Renewable Energy industries. Institute has initiated programmes to collaborate closely with MNCs and Research Institutions for innovative research. The mission is to make this place of learning a unique Centre for providing skilled human resource capable of reshaping the future energy basket to secure energy future of the country.
The Student Hostels of the Institute provide comfortable accommodation and are located close to the administrative and academic area. It has several sports and recreational facilities as well. Arrangements are made as smooth as possible by offering comfortable and safe stay in the campus.

Eligibility Criteria
Admission will be based on JEE (Advanced) or JEE (Mains) with 80% aggregate in Class 12. During preparation of merit list preference will be given to JEE (Advanced) qualified candidates. Minimum 60% in aggregate (55% for SC/ST) in Class 12 in case of JEE (Advanced). The criteria of 60% in Class 12 is waived-off for current year only for JEE (Advanced) qualified students.
Note: Seats will be filled based on JEE Advanced Rank. If seats remain vacant after subsequent rounds of admission through JEE (Advanced), then those vacant seats will be filled based on JEE (Main) rank provided such candidates have obtained a minimum of 80% aggregate marks (75% for SC/ST/PwD) in Class 12.
Foreign students are also eligible to apply for admission. 10% supernumerary seats of the total sanctioned strength are allotted for foreign students. He/She must be within the top 20% of the successful candidates in their respective class XII (or equivalent) board examination. In case a Board does not provide information about the cut-off for top 20 percentile, the candidate will have to produce a certificate from the respective Board stating that he/she falls within the top 20 percentile of successful candidates. International students may also apply through ‘Study in India’ website. Admission for this category will be offered under the Cultural Exchange Fellowship Programme of the Government of India, administered by Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR), New Delhi or Study in India programme. For these admissions, the candidates are required to apply through the Indian High Commission/Embassy in their respective countries.
Reservation policy in seats as per the Government of India directive will be followed. In addition, following the GOI directive and to encourage technical education among the girls, 17% of the seats will be reserved for female candidates on supernumerary basis over the current strength. The Certificate for SC/ST/OBC (NCL)/PwD/EWS must be submitted in the specified format during time of admission.
Fee Structure
The application fee is non-refundable. It is Rs. 600/- + Rs. 108/- (Taxes) for SC/ST/PwD and female Candidates and Rs. 1200/- + Rs. 216/- (Taxes) for all other candidates
